  Tilapia is the common name used for a variety of cichlid fish. It is a hardy, freshwater species which inhabits tropical and sub-tropical regions, and can thrive in fresh or backfish water conditions such as ponds, rivers, lakes, and tanks. Tilapia is also called St. Peter's fish due do its reference in the Bible as the fish Jesus fed to the multitudes. They have great commercial value due to their biological characteristics, being prolific breeders and a rapid-growing species. Commercially grown male tilapia are fed a vegetable or cereal based  diet, and can weigh up to two pounds within nine months.
